Kaumātua Housing Taking Shape

TE POU KŌRERO - HŌTOKE 2024

Work has begun in earnest on our Kaumātua Housing Project.

In May, we began developing a plan for housing for kaumātua on Collins Street, ’Āwera. The first step was for uri Thomas Katene to remove the old army shed.

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Ruanui Trust kaiw’aka’aere Rachel Arnott said our kaumātua were an integral part of the fabric of Ngāti Ruanui. “It’s important to us that they have warm, dry, low maintenance w’are to live in with easy access to all places important to them.”

Now, with the site blessed and demolition complete, the most crucial step can began.

The housing plans, which includes four kitset homes, are currently before council for approval .

“This project is now moving into a really exciting chapter.”

The project is expected to be complete by December this year.
