Iwi contributes dollar-for-dollar with launch of ‘WhānauSaver’ initiative

Ngāti Ruanui has teamed up with a kaupapa Māori financial scheme similar to ‘KiwiSaver’ to assist with financial empowerment.
Through the new scheme, Ngāti Ruanui will contribute a dollar for every dollar registered uri contribute to their WhānauSaver accounts (up to $100).
“We are excited to make this financial scheme available for Ngāti Ruanui uri. It is another way toward home ownership, tertiary education, and financial success among our uri,” said Kaiw’aka’aere, Rachel Rae.
“By matching dollar-for-dollar contributions, we are hopeful that more of our w’ānau who w’akapapa to Ngāti Ruanui will register and take advantage of the incentive.”
Ngāti Ruanui became the sixth Taranaki iwi to join the WhānauSaver kaupapa. WhānauSaver now has over 700 members and is quickly growing.
“W’ānau who w’akapapa to more than one iwi involved in WhānauSaver can take advantage of their contributions as well, which could see their savings quickly multiply.
“We’re encouraging that w’ānau set up their accounts as soon as possible, and from birth for our newest uri members,” said Rae.
Through the six different WhānauSaver investment funds, contributions can quickly grow and be accessed for education, housing, retirement, or financial emergencies.
To receive the full contribution from Ngāti Ruanui, uri must be first registered with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Ruanui Iwi Trust and then register with Ka Uruora.
We encourage everyone to head across to the Ka Uruora website to learn more about WhānauSaver and the other services on offer.
