TPK Ngāhuru: From the Kaiw’aka’aere

Te Pou Kōrero - Ngāhuru 2024

I write in the hope that you and your w’ānau are safe and well wherever you are. This year is again shaping up to be one full of many kaupapa.

It began with the various calls to unite that came from the Kīngitanga, Rātana Pā, and continued in Waitangi in response to the Government’s actions and policy agenda. It was amazing to see such a response from iwi and our people.

Once again, Ngāti Ruanui prevailed in the fight against seabed mining. I am proud of the efforts of our people, but we face new challenges with the Government’s proposed Fast Track law which has faced strong opposition.

Positively, we witnessed the redress for Taranaki-Maunga being read for the first time in Parliament, putting to rest a lot of mamae suffered by our people. A historic moment for ngā iwi o Taranaki.

ELECTIONS

Later this year, we will elect a new Pou Tuara board. We are asking w’ānau to think about nominations and putting their names forward to represent their ‘apū.

Lastly, the political climate is hugely polarised at present. For that reason, we are asking w’ānau to look out for one another, stay strong, and stay the course.
